Training for Further Education Lecturers
Positive Discipline and Making Sense of Secondary School Data

The Wolf Report has fundamentally changed the educational landscape, presenting opportunities and challenges to further education (FE) providers nationwide. Tiger Education and Training provides the systems and training that you need to fill skills gaps and respond to the recommendations presented in the Report.

FE Training Session

The Wolf Report challenges FE lecturers to develop capability in two areas:

• Effective classroom management of pre-16 learners
• Effective application of prior attainment data provided by schools

It states that FE providers should have a legal right to enrol pre-16 learners and offer a full KS4 programme, either alone or in collaboration with schools. FE providers will therefore be subject to the same performance monitoring requirements as schools.

This has placed pressure on FE providers to become better equipped for teaching pre-16 learners. Accountability for and management of pre-16 learners, with regard not only to outcomes but also to safeguarding, will be crucial for a positive Ofsted evaluation.

In this context, we offer the following training sessions to FE providers:

1. Behaviour management training to enable your staff to work with pre and post 16 learners
2. School data training to enable your staff to understand and apply school data

Training Session 1: Positive Discipline
Co-operative and consistent behaviour strategies for effective teaching and learning

Effective behaviour management training equips practitioners with the skills they need to work with pre and post 16 learners. We know that FE practitioners are experts in their vocation; we can help improve the quality of delivery to learners with workshop-based training on Positive Discipline.

FE Training Session

The idea at the heart of Positive Discipline is simple: preparation and prevention in behaviour management rather than fire-fighting. It presents tried-and-tested classroom management strategies which create a disciplined, cooperative and consistent learning environment for both teacher and student.

Three key themes underpin Positive Discipline:
• prevention
• esteem
• cooperation

Training in Positive Discipline translates these themes into practical strategies which will help to maximise achievement. Training sessions end with an interactive planning exercise which generates a clear strategy for improving behaviour management – at both a classroom and provision-wide level.

Training Session 2: Making Sense of Secondary School Data
Applying school data to improve success rates and progression to post-16 study

School data presents a minefield of acronyms, statistics, percentages and scores that can leave FE lecturers feeling confused and de-motivated.

Making Sense of Secondary School Data helps FE lecturers to:

• understand and interpret commonly used prior attainment data
• apply prior attainment data to set expectations for performance

The training session helps FE providers to identify relevant prior attainment data and use it to set potential outcome grades for individual learners. Themes such as effective progress monitoring, reporting and intervention are presented, and tried-and-tested strategies discussed.

The training session may also include demonstrations of Tiger Education and Training learner performance tools that are being used by client organisations in FE. These Microsoft Excel-based tools can be designed and built by the company in quick time and at low cost – and tailored to the unique needs of the client organisation.

The training session culminates in an interactive planning session to create a strategy for better utilisation of school data in the organisation.

Training in Positive Discipline and Making Sense of Secondary School Data will help lead to:

• More partner schools and academies
• Stronger communication with schools and academies
• Improved results
• Increased recruitment to post-16 programmes
